Sherry Wheelock Native American Artists The name of the artists I chose was Gary Ampel because out of the artosts I looked at his pictures stuck out to me because they have a meaning behind ach picture, like each little piece of the wolves outside the piture, look at the wolve inside the picture means a whole differant meaning. Ilike the images in the baround when they make them look like 3-d. They look to be very spiritual. The oil painings always intriged me cause I use to try and watch my uncle just pick up the brush and start mixing colors together coming out with color and that color, pu his brush to the canvas and just go and end up with a really pretty picture when he was done. I always thought it was so kool watching a picture come together, very fascinating how th details of everything comes together.
Lenore M. Shepardhonor circles
The name of the artist I chose to present is Sara Bates. She is a Cherokee Native American artist who uses natural things of the earth like corn, shells, beans, and pine cones to make her traditional honor circles. Most of her circles are between 8 and 12 feet wide. As she gather's her materials and works on her art, she is always praying. Once her artwork is done, she gathers all of her supplies up, stores them in a box and uses them the next time she feels inspired. I chose her as my artist because I guess this is what I would like Native American art to be. To me, it is best when it contains some spiritual connection to who we are and what our beliefs are.

Urshel Taylor
The Native American artist that seems to stand out the most to me is Urshel Taylor. Taylor is a member of the Pima Salt River Community Indian Tribe. As a young man he joined the Marine Corps and planned on making the military his career. However, by 1963 having children to consider, he decided that the military life was nor what he wanted for his family and then resigned. He took a job as an instructor teaching art at the Intermountain Inter-Tribal School in Brigham City, Utah. At this time, he worked on his skills by studying with such noted arist as Kent Wallace and a Profesor Linstrom at Utah State University. Taylor became very involved with the Pow wow ciruit and was deeply involved wirh the traditional native American dances in which he and his three sons danced in competition for years. Having the need to express his emotions he experienced when dancing he began to carve dolls and painting the traditional Northern typre of dancer. Alot of his work comes from his personnel experiences as a native American man and his journy through life. Taylors work reflects both traditional and very contemporary styles. When Taylor is asked what his most important accomplishments are, he states that he is most proud of his family. Though both hard times and good, they can count on one another for support in their individual efforts.

Native American Art is an knowledgeable artistic behavior performed by an native American. This is established with the thought in mind that if a polish person does art than it is polish art. Or the person is a polish artist. If an artist is native American and lives on native land or in native country will working his artist preference, I believe his work should be considered Native American Art and the artist be a Native American Artist. Maybe an artist would like to be recolonize as Menominee Native American Artist? Native American Artist might be to vague.

Native American art is art that is demonstrated everyday by native american families on a daily bases. It starts as the little ones wake up in the morning and watching their routines as they get ready for the day. It is a art of planning your day around your job and your family obligations hoping that nothing goes wrong but usually does anyway. What true native american art is balancing family, work, and college to better the lives of your little ones so that they have a better life than you had.

To me Native American art seems like a label, and I hate labels! j/k...Anyhow who can define what Native American art is anyway? Is it a painting with an Native American in it? Is it something beaded by a Native American woman? I guess to me the label "Native American Art" is kind of silly. Art is art, whether it be a painting, pottery, books, films, or music. There are all kinds of different art and artists out there and in my opinion it shouldn't be given a label, it should simply be known as ART.

Native American artist
L.David Eveningthunder is a Native American Artist from the Shoshane Tribe. His art pays tribute to contemporary Indian dancers. He feels Native American dancers keep traditions alive. He also goes on about the modern day pow-wow and how it is important because of the social interchange between whites and Native Americans. All of his drawings were of Native American Dancers and the different forms. I enjoyed looking at the drawings because it had a spiritual effect of not only the dancers but of past ancestors.http://www.artnatam.com/artist.html

link: http://www.artnatam.com/dtiger/bio.html
Born in 1961, Dana Tiger, a member of the Muscogee Nation is a renound Native American Artist. She won many awards for her paintings in college and in 1985 she announced herself as a full time painter. Her father, Jerome Tiger, was also a famous artist and died of an accidental gunshot wound in 1967. That was one of the many hardships she endured, others included the murder of her brother, Chris, in 1990; and hearing her only-living sibling Lisa was diagnosed with HIV-AIDS in 1992. Aside of the tradgedies, through the works of her father and the words of her uncle, Dana learned a great deal about her culture and background. She learned the in's and out's of the traditions. She has two children, Christie and Coleman Lisan, named after her late siblings and lives in Oklahoma with her husband, Donnie Blair. Dana is also an advocate for Rights of Women and Minorities, especially Native Americans. She has done paintings such as "Patrol of the Light Horse," "Circle of Life," and "Beautiful New Worlds." One of my favorites of hers would be "Gathering Stregnth" because it looks real nice and when you look at it, it just looks powerful. John has recieved national recognition for his work and he has work all over the United States. John has works of art in galleries from The Cherokee National Museum in Oklahoma, to The John F. Kennedy Museum in Washington D.C. John has recieved the "1992 Artist of the Year" by the Indian Art and Crafts association. His works of art are so vibrant and colorful, they really are pieces that would catch anyone's attention. Some of my favorites include "Looking at You, Looking at Me", "Out of the Mist", and "Here They Come". I also selected John because some of his works mimics some painting of Andy Worhal. For example check out "Warhol Wolves" and "Warhol Bears". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm7tgjVDIzg&feature=related, this is a link to watch a three part series of John explain his inspiration, what native art is to him, and his paintings.

I have chosen to do my artist as Jolene Rickard. She is from the Tuscarora Nation and a member of the turtle clan. She currently resides on the Tuscarora Nation in Sanborn,New York. Jolene Rickard is a highly respected photographer whose work has appeared at the "Heard Museum" in Arizona, "Denver Art Museum" in Rochester, New York, and "The Gallery of American Indian Community House" in New York, New York. She has decided that her path was to have deep connections with her cultural hertiage. And she quotes. "The idea that I am interested in is the reformulization of our tradition knowledge...I think of my work as creating visual markers". Her work is very modern but usually in her portaits she has tiny, red colored designs that have a specific meaning from the Tuscarora culture. I have chose Jolene Rickard for the fact that I believe she is a true Native American artist. I Like how she includes her culture in her work and how her work comes directly from the heart. Also how she takes photographs of certain things that reminds her of her culture and makes it visual for the younger generation. http://museum.msu.edu/museum/tes/sisters/rickard.htm http://www.nmai.si.edu/exhibitions/reservation_x/artists/rickardN.htm

The Native American Artist I chose is Tony Abeyta. Tony was born in 1965, he is a Navajo artist from New Mexico. He attended the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe. He also attended Maryland College Instititute of Art. He also went aboard in France and Italy. His studies came to an end as a graduate student at Chicago's Art Institute. He was chosen to create the signature image of the National Museum of the American Indian's opening in Washington, D.C. He paints picture that reflect his tribe's belief that everything and everyone is gifted with some higher power. He experiments with different types of images and mediums. I found a lot of his work very unique because of his use of color. Some of his painting seem dark but there is always some type of yellow which makes the painting pop out. Many of his color choices are thought up by the colors of his homeland. The painting that caught my eye was Night Waters and it made me want to see more and know more about the artist.
